Preventing Electrostatic Discharge
(ESD) in Hydraulic Systems

When oil flows through the filter element in hydraulic systems, Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) can occur. This can cause spark discharge within the system, leading to damage to hydraulic components. We offer ESD filters from Filtrec with anti-static protection to prevent spark discharge and maintain effective filtration in critical systems.
Changes in International Environmental Standards
To protect the environment, oil producers now deliver new environmentally friendly hydraulic and lubricating oils to OEMs and product suppliers. Unlike previous variants, these new oils have a higher risk of generating electrostatic electricity. Historically, hydraulic oils often contained carbon and zinc additives (ZDDP) to prevent wear and corrosion. However, these additives would not comply with current international environmental standards as they are classified as harmful.
What is ESD?
When oil flows through non-conductive filtration materials (synthetic and standard fiberglass materials) and hydraulic fluids, it promotes the formation of charge accumulations due to the triboelectric effect. If the voltage created exceeds a certain value (the oil's dielectric strength), a "dielectric breakdown" occurs, leading to an electric discharge. This charge-generating process increases with the flow rate or viscosity of the hydraulic fluid.
Characteristics of ESD
- Squeaking sounds similar to cavitation
- Filter media showing signs of burn damage
In systems at risk for ESD, it is crucial to use filters with anti-static properties.
By utilizing Filtrec's ESD filters, which feature anti-static protection, you can effectively prevent spark discharge and protect your hydraulic systems from potential damage, ensuring safe and reliable operation in compliance with modern environmental standards.

Issues Arising from ESD
- Sparks can burn and create holes in the filtration media, allowing unwanted particles to pass through unfiltered.
- ESD can accelerate oil aging, shortening its lifespan.
- ESD surges can disrupt and damage sensitive sensors and electronic components within the hydraulic system.
